Over the last few weeks, I’ve found myself reading murder mysteries, spy thrillers and psychological suspense novels to the exclusion of all other genres.  It was time for a change of pace, so on Sunday I picked up Love Story, by Jennifer Echols.

Love Story is a young adult contemporary romance novel.  Set at New York City College, this is the story of Erin Blackwell, who grew up on her grandmothers’ racehorse farm in Kentucky, and Hunter Allen, her stable boy.

When Erin chose to pursue a creative writing career over a business major, her grandmother cut her off financially and gave Erin’s college tuition and promised racehorse farm inheritance to their handsome stable boy, Hunter.  Now Erin is waiting tables to pay for her college dorm room and working hard to win a publishing internship that will launch her career.

She’s writing about him.  He’s writing about her.  And everybody is reading between the lines.

She despises Hunter for stealing her inheritance, but thoughts of him creep into her head during a writing assignment for class.  On the day she is to present her short story, Hunter transfers into her class and reads all about her private fantasies about him!  Not to be outdone, when it’s Hunter’s turn to write a short story, he writes a sexy story that drives the class wild with curiosity.

But could their own Love Story come true?

Erin and Hunter are both strong-willed characters determined to make it in New York City, without any help from each other.  At times, I found them both to be maddeningly immature, with all the I-Love-Him, I-Love-Him-Not back and forth drama, but then I remembered what I was like as a college freshman and decided they were written true to their age.

Once I started judging them based on their age and situation, instead of mine, I relaxed a little and just went with the story.  I’m glad I did because it turned out to be quite fun.  The short stories they each wrote for the creative writing classes told us much more about each of them than any other part of the story.  Clearly, there are some family issues to sort out, but these two have a chance at forever.

I wish there had been a little more to the ending, it ended rather abruptly, but I have a pretty active imagination and will just fill in my own blanks.

Overall, I enjoyed Love Story and the change of pace it brought to my Sunday afternoon.  I gave this Lazy Day Escape four sunshines!

Are you a fan of Jennifer Echols’ previous novels?  Which one is your favorite?

Happy Reading!

Parents: Love Story is a young adult romance, but does contain some adult situations (these characters are college freshmen after all), so it may be better suited for older young adults.

  1. I’m glad I read this one and I’m thinking I need to go back and pick up her others, too. Since I was able to read it all in one sitting, it was just a nice way to spend my Sunday afternoon.
